Marywood Retreat & Conference Center Wedding Photography

Marywood Retreat & Conference Center in St. Johns, Florida, is a beautiful wedding venue with elegant architecture, spacious grounds, and plenty of greenery. One of my favorite things about photographing weddings here is the variety of backdrops available, from the attractive buildings to the lush outdoor scenery.

The property has a peaceful, traditional atmosphere that works especially well for couples planning a religious wedding ceremony, although it’s certainly not limited to those celebrations. There’s plenty of room to move around and explore, and the combination of architecture, trees, and riverfront scenery makes it a lovely setting for wedding photography.

My Favorite Wedding Photo Locations at Marywood

The Surrounding Greenery

The greenery around Marywood is one of my favorite features of the property. There are beautiful trees and natural backdrops throughout the grounds, making it easy to find attractive locations for couple’s portraits and wedding party pictures.

I especially like how the greenery complements the buildings. You can create a nice variety of photographs without needing to leave the venue.

The Architecture and Buildings

Marywood has some really pretty architecture that makes an excellent backdrop for wedding portraits. I enjoy incorporating the buildings into photographs because they give the images a more elegant, traditional feel that contrasts nicely with the natural surroundings.

The Riverfront and Evening Light

Being located along the St. Johns River, Marywood can also offer beautiful light for portraits later in the day. However, there’s one thing worth keeping in mind: the property is surrounded by large trees, which can block the sun earlier than you might expect.

If you’re hoping for warm, sunset-style portraits, I recommend planning them a little before the actual sunset. Waiting until the sun is right on the horizon can mean losing that beautiful light behind the trees.

What to Know About Photography at Marywood

One of the biggest photography considerations at Marywood is the indoor chapel. It’s a beautiful setting for a ceremony, but it can be fairly dark, with limited natural light, warm interior lighting, and colored walls that affect how light looks in photographs.

That’s not necessarily a problem, but it’s something I’d recommend discussing with your photographer. Having someone who’s experienced with challenging indoor lighting can make a big difference in capturing natural-looking photographs during the ceremony.

Another consideration is the layout of the property. While the grounds aren’t enormous, moving between locations can take a little extra time because you sometimes need to walk around or through the buildings.

Tips for Planning Your Marywood Wedding

If you’re considering a first look, Marywood is a venue where it can be especially helpful. Taking some portraits before the ceremony gives you more flexibility afterward and allows extra time to explore the grounds without feeling rushed.

I’d also recommend building a little walking time into your photography schedule. There are several beautiful locations around the property, but moving between them isn’t always a straight path.

Finally, if sunset portraits are important to you, talk with your photographer about the best time to schedule them. Because of the surrounding trees, the prettiest evening light may happen earlier than the official sunset time.
