Preparing for your wedding day: A sample timeline

Let’s talk about the wedding day timeline. I know it’s not the most exciting part of wedding planning, but it can make or break your photos. A well-planned day means you’re relaxed, the light is on your side, and nobody is scrambling to find the bridesmaids ten minutes before the ceremony.

Below is a sample timeline for a wedding with an evening ceremony and a first look. Every wedding day is different, so yours may shift because of travel time, venue logistics, or other unique situations. Also, having a second photographer can provide some extra wiggle room. Think of this as a starting point that you and your photographer can customize together.

2:00-2:30: The Groom

The guys often get overlooked, so I like to start with them. I want them to end up with photos they love and feel proud of. Hair and makeup usually take longer for the bride anyway, so this is the perfect window to get the guys’ shots done early. Then they can relax and enjoy the rest of the day.

2:30-2:45: Details

Wedding details are an important part of your story. This is when I photograph the dress, shoes, jewelry, invitations, rings, and anything else you’ve chosen with care. While I’m shooting details, I’m also capturing candid moments of you and your bridesmaids getting ready.

2:45-3:30: Bridal Prep

Once the details are done, it’s time to get into your dress. This is a big moment! I usually ask the mother of the bride and the bridesmaids to be dressed before you slip into yours, so everyone looks their best in these images. After that, you’ll add your jewelry, veil, and shoes, and we’ll take some additional bridal portraits.

3:30-3:40: First Look

This is one of my favorite parts of the whole day. I’ll find the perfect spot and get everyone in place, and you don’t need to stress about any of it. I choose a location that’s as private and secluded as possible, so the two of you can enjoy a few quiet minutes together before the day fills up with friends and family.

3:40-4:30: Portraits

After you’ve taken your time with the first look, we’ll take some romantic portraits while the initial excitement is still fresh. I’ll scout out the best locations for these, too. Toward the end, the bridal party can start making their way over for their photos.

4:30-5:00: Bridal Party Photos

Now it’s time for the whole crew! I build in a little extra time here in case something runs behind. One easy way to stay on schedule is to have someone pin on the boutonnieres before the guys arrive. We’ll take photos of the guys and girls separately and together. Afterward, the two of you can go into hiding and take a break while guests arrive.

5:00-5:30: Reception Details

If the reception is at the same location as the ceremony, I use this time to photograph the decor, tables, and all the little touches you spent months planning before guests walk in.

5:30-6:00: Ceremony

It’s time to get married! Most ceremonies run about 30 minutes or less. If yours will be longer, we’ll adjust the timeline to fit. Soak it all in, because it will go by faster than you expect.

6:00-6:20: Family Portraits

Family formals usually happen right after the ceremony while everyone is still there. I need about 20 minutes. Before the wedding I’ll send you a questionnaire where you can list the exact groupings you want so nothing gets missed. If possible, I recommend shooting these outdoors, where the portraits feel more natural, especially if the ceremony space is dark.

6:20-6:40: Sunset Portraits

In late spring, summer, and early fall, sunset is the best time of day for portraits. The light is golden and glowing, and it makes everything look dreamy. Sunset times change throughout the year, so depending on your date, we may need to do these photos after the reception has started. We’ll plan around it together.

6:45: The Party Begins!

The bridal party lines up for introductions, and the celebration kicks off! From here on, the timeline gets much looser. After introductions come dinner, the first dance, parent dances, and any other events you’ve planned. Then it’s time to dance!

10:30: Grand Exit

I love photographing the moment you leave to begin life as husband and wife. The exit is a fun place to get creative, and I’ve seen everything from sparklers to bubbles to glow sticks (and plenty in between).

Approximate Time Needed

  • Details and prep: about 1.5 hours
  • First look and portraits: 45-60 minutes
  • Bridal party: 15-20 minutes
  • Family formals: 15-25 minutes
