What if it rains on your wedding day?

One of the questions I hear most during wedding season is, “Soooo, what do you do if it RAINS?!” After years of shooting weddings in every kind of weather, here’s my honest answer: you will still get beautiful portraits and bright, vibrant colors. Overcast skies diffuse sunlight into soft, even light, which flatters skin tones. Some of my favorite weddings have happened on rainy days.

I know rain isn’t ideal, and nobody wishes for it. But we can’t control it and if it happens, it’s going to be just fine! Here’s what to keep in mind.

1. All I need is a covering

Seriously, just one porch. A covered area gives me the soft, directional light that makes natural-light portraits work, and it keeps you and your outfits dry. An overhang, a covered walkway, a barn doorway, or a large window can all do the same job. It doesn’t take much space to create gorgeous images.

2. Let your photographer worry about the photos

You have enough on your plate. If rain is in the forecast, I’ll do extra scouting to find a covered location or two for your first look, romantic portraits, and bridal party photos. I also keep an eye on the forecast as your date approaches and adjust the timeline if needed, so we can use any breaks in the weather.

3. Take it one step at a time

Don’t try to picture your whole day and every possible rain scenario. Do make sure to talk to your coordinator to make sure you have a rain plan for your ceremony and reception venue, then let your vendors handle the rest. We’ve all worked through rainy days before, and we know how to adapt.

4. A few small things help

  • Bring a clear umbrella. It keeps you dry and looks great in photos, since it doesn’t block your faces or outfits.
  • Pack a towel and an extra pair of shoes. They’ll keep you comfortable and your dress clean.
  • Plan a little extra time. Moving between locations may take longer, and a relaxed pace keeps the day stress-free.
