Engagement Photography in Jacksonville & St. Augustine

One of my favorite things about engagement sessions is how relaxed they can be. Unlike a wedding day, where there’s a schedule to follow and a lot happening around us, an engagement session gives us time to slow down, get to know each other, and have some fun. There’s no pressure to get everything perfect. We can walk around, try different ideas, laugh at the awkward moments, and just enjoy the experience.

That’s really what I want engagement photography to feel like. Less like a formal photo shoot and more like you’re spending time together while I happen to be there taking pictures.

I photograph engagement sessions throughout Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and Northeast Florida, whether you’re planning a wedding or simply want some beautiful photographs of the two of you together.

You Don’t Have to Know How to Pose

One of the things I hear most often from couples is that they feel awkward in front of the camera. I completely understand that. Most people aren’t used to having someone follow them around with a camera, and it’s normal to feel a little unsure of what to do.

That’s why I don’t expect you to show up knowing how to pose.

I usually start with some fairly standard, comfortable poses. Nothing too complicated. It gives us a chance to ease into the session and helps me get a feel for how you interact with each other. As we go, I’ll start incorporating more movement, whether that’s walking together, a lift, or something a little more playful.

The longer we spend together, the better I get to know your personalities. Some couples love being silly, laughing, and trying fun ideas. Others are a little more reserved and prefer photographs that feel classic or formal. Neither approach is better than the other. I adjust how I direct you based on what feels natural for you.

My job is to help you feel comfortable enough that you’re not constantly thinking about the camera.

And if we’ve all spent the session laughing and having a good time, I consider that a pretty successful afternoon.

Finding the Right Location for Your Engagement Photos

One of the first things we’ll figure out is where to take your engagement photos. Fortunately, we have a lot of great options around Northeast Florida.

Jacksonville has beautiful parks, interesting downtown areas, and, of course, the beach. Jacksonville Beach is one of my favorite places for engagement sessions. If you love the coast, St. Augustine also has some beautiful beaches.

Downtown St. Augustine is another favorite of mine because there’s so much variety. You can find greenery and park settings, then walk a relatively short distance and have historic streets and city scenery in the background. It gives us the opportunity to create different-looking photographs during the same session.

If you’re not sure where to go, I have a list of favorite locations that I can share upon request. I include photo examples so you can get a better idea of what your own engagement pictures might look like in each setting.

That said, you absolutely don’t have to choose somewhere from my list. If there’s a location that’s meaningful to you as a couple, I’m always open to exploring it. Maybe it’s a place where you spend a lot of time together, somewhere connected to your relationship, or just a spot you both really love.

The best location isn’t necessarily the most popular one. It’s somewhere that feels right for you.

What to Wear and How to Prepare

My biggest piece of advice when it comes to engagement session outfits is simple: dress comfortably.

We may be walking through a park, moving around on the beach, or spending time in grassy areas. Depending on the location and what you’re comfortable with, I might suggest sitting on the grass, leaning against something, or even lying down for a particular photograph.

You don’t need to dress casually if that’s not your style, but you should be able to move around and feel good in whatever you’re wearing.

The more comfortable you feel, the more naturally you’ll move and interact with each other. That tends to show in your photographs.

Outfit changes are welcome, too. Just remember that changing clothes takes time out of the session itself. I generally recommend no more than one outfit change so we can spend most of our time actually taking pictures.

Another thing to keep in mind is Florida weather. It can be unpredictable, especially when we’re planning an outdoor session.

I’ve had couples schedule their engagement photos around a wedding makeup trial, which can be a great idea. But if the forecast suddenly changes and we’re dealing with pouring rain, we may need to reschedule. I always encourage couples to keep a little flexibility in their plans, particularly when coordinating appointments around the session.

Engagement Photography Collections

I offer two straightforward engagement photography collections, depending on how much time you’d like to spend taking pictures.

45-Minute Engagement Session — $385

A great option if you want a relaxed session with time for a variety of photographs in one general area.

90-Minute Engagement Session — $450

A longer session that gives us more time to explore, try different ideas, and work in an outfit change if you’d like.

Both collections include an online digital gallery and a print release, so you can download your photographs and have prints made.

I don’t set a limit on the number of photographs you receive. Depending on the length of the session and how things go, couples typically receive somewhere around 100 to 300 photographs, although that number can vary.

You can book an engagement session on its own, even if I’m not photographing your wedding. Engagement sessions are also included in some of my wedding photography collections.

More Than Just Engagement Pictures

If you’ve also booked me for your wedding, an engagement session is a great opportunity for us to get to know each other before the big day.

You’ll get a feel for how I work, I’ll learn more about your personalities, and you’ll have some experience being photographed together. By the time your wedding comes around, the camera will hopefully feel a little less unfamiliar.

But even if you’re not planning a wedding with me, I think engagement sessions are worth doing simply because this is a special time in your relationship. You don’t need a complicated reason to have some beautiful photographs of yourselves together.

At the end of the day, what I remember most about my favorite engagement sessions isn’t a particular pose or location. It’s that we were laughing, smiling, and genuinely having a good time.

That’s the experience I want you to have, too.
