What Questions Should You Ask a Wedding Photographer Before Hiring?

Choosing your wedding photographer is a big decision. You’ll likely spend more time with them than with any other vendor on your wedding day, and the photos are what you’ll have long after the day is over. A beautiful website doesn’t tell you everything, so here are some questions I recommend asking before you sign a contract.
Ask about their work
1. Can I see a full wedding gallery?
A photographer’s website and social media feed show their highlights. Ask to see a complete wedding from start to finish. That way you can be sure you love all of their work, not just the best of the best. Look at how they handle the getting-ready moments, a dark reception, a crowded dance floor, and a rainy afternoon.
2. How would you describe your style?
Some photographers shoot bright and airy, others are moody and dramatic, and some lean documentary while others lean more posed. None of these is wrong, but you want your photos to look like what you imagine. Ask how they edit, too. Photos with true-to-life color tend to age well, while heavy trends can look dated in ten years.
3. Have you shot at my venue before?
It’s not a dealbreaker if they haven’t, but a photographer who knows your venue already knows where the good light is, where the covered spots are, and where their favorite places to shoot are. If they haven’t been there, ask how they scout a new location.
Ask about the wedding day
4. What do you do if it rains on a wedding day?
This one matters, and the answer tells you a lot about how a photographer works. Here’s mine: you will still get beautiful portraits and bright, vibrant colors. All I need is one covering! A covered area, an overhang, a barn doorway, or a large window can create gorgeous natural-light portraits. Look for a photographer who has a plan and sounds calm about it. 5. Will you help me build my wedding day timeline?
The timeline can make or break your photography. A good photographer will guide you on how much time to allow for portraits, a first look, family formals, and golden hour, instead of leaving you to guess.
6. Do you offer engagement sessions?
An engagement session is a low-pressure way to get comfortable in front of the camera and get to know your photographer before the wedding day. Ask whether one is included or available as an add-on.
7. Will you be the one shooting my wedding, and will you bring a second photographer?
Some studios hire multiple photographers so the person you meet may not be the person who shows up to shoot on your wedding day. Make sure you know exactly who will be there. Ask whether a second shooter is included and what that person does, such as capturing the groom’s prep, or a second angle during the ceremony.
8. How do you handle family formals?
Ask how they keep these moving quickly and smoothly. I send a questionnaire before the wedding where you can list the exact groupings you want, so nothing gets missed and no one is wandering around looking for Aunt Linda.
9. How much direction will you give us?
Some couples want guidance and posing help. Others want to be left alone to enjoy the day. A good photographer can do both, so tell them what you prefer and see how they respond.
Ask about important details
10. What happens if you get sick or have an emergency?
It’s uncomfortable to think about, but it’s important. Ask if they have a backup plan, such as a network of trusted photographers who can step in.
11. What equipment do you bring, and do you have backups?
Professionals carry backup cameras, lenses, flashes, and memory cards. Ask whether they shoot with dual card slots, which saves every image to two cards at once in case one fails.
12. How many photos will we receive, and how long until we get them?
Photographers typically differ widely on both. Some will limit it to a certain number and others won’t. Ask for an average number of final images and a realistic delivery window, including how long you’ll wait for a sneak peek to share with family and friends.
13. How will we receive and keep our photos?
Ask about online galleries, how long they stay active, and whether you’ll receive high-resolution downloads with a print release. Also ask whether they offer prints and albums, and whether those are done in-house or through a professional lab.
14. What’s included in each package, and what costs extra?
Ask about travel fees, additional hours, second shooters, and any other add-ons. A clear price breakdown helps you avoid surprises later.
15. What are your payment, retainer, and cancellation policies?
Read the contract carefully. Make sure you understand how much is due and when, whether the retainer is refundable, and what happens if you need to change your date.
